About Charles Burchfield: Elemental
At Whitney Exhibitions, *Charles Burchfield: Elemental* revisits the watercolors and writings of Charles Ephraim Burchfield, an American painter who turned weather, trees, and small-town streets into psychological landscapes. The show draws on the deep archive held in Buffalo at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, while situating his work within a wider museum history, including holdings across more than a hundred public collections. In New York, the exhibition reads as a corrective to a modernism story that often sidelines regional voices. Burchfield’s nature is less a view than a system of signs.
About the Artist
Charles Burchfield
Charles Burchfield was an American watercolorist whose work turns weather, yards, and ordinary structures into charged motifs. Much of his mature production was developed in the dedicated studio behind his home in West Seneca, with additional studies made outdoors and later reworked on paper.
