Charles Burchfield: Elemental New York Performances

At Whitney Exhibitions, *Charles Burchfield: Elemental* revisits the watercolors and writings of Charles Ephraim Burchfield, an American painter who turned weather, trees, and small-town streets into psychological landscapes. The show draws on the deep archive held in Buffalo at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, while situating his work within a wider museum history, including holdings across more than a hundred public collections. In New York, the exhibition reads as a corrective to a modernism story that often sidelines regional voices. Burchfield’s nature is less a view than a system of signs.
