AACM NYC: Celebrating 61 Years of Creative Music with JD Parran & Spirit Stage 3 // Adegoke Steve Colson and Iqua Colson

AACM NYC is the New York City presence of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians, presenting concert programs that trace the organization’s lineage in composer-led, exploratory work.

JD Parran is a classical musician whose work in New York City has often moved through the city’s creative-music networks as well as concert settings. At Roulette, he has appeared as part of AACM NYC programs, including a 61st-anniversary bill pairing his project Spirit Stage 3 with composer and musician Adegoke Steve Colson and vocalist-composer Iqua Colson.

Spirit Stage 3 is a classical-leaning ensemble heard in New York City contexts that value experimentation and contemporary practice. The group has appeared at Roulette, including as part of AACM NYC’s 61st anniversary program alongside multi-instrumentalist JD Parran and composers Adegoke Steve Colson and Iqua Colson.

Adegoke Steve Colson is an American pianist, composer, and educator whose work sits between contemporary jazz, experimental music, and classical reference points. Long affiliated with the AACM since the early 1970s, he has built a career through collaborations with ensembles and artists including Freedom Riders, Arturo O’Farrill, JD Parran, Spirit Stage 3, and vocalist-composer Iqua Colson.

Adegoke Steve Colson and Iqua Colson were featured in the Dialogues and IMPACT programmes of Composers Now, founded by Tania León.
