Mozart's The Magic Flute—Holiday Presentation

Mozart’s *The Magic Flute* (1791) is a two-act German singspiel, built from spoken dialogue alongside arias and ensembles, and it remains one of the repertory’s durable touchstones. The story follows a prince and a bird-catcher moving through trials, riddles, and competing moral claims, where fairy-tale logic meets Enlightenment ceremony; its plainspoken tunes sit beside rigorous counterpoint, an earned paradox at the heart of the score. In New York, the opera has long circulated through major houses and smaller companies, reflecting the city’s appetite for both canonical opera and experiment. Current NYC presentations connect performance with exhibitions and art at Amore Opera, The Morgan Library & Museum, and 92NY, with associations including Maurice Sendak.
