Lou Donaldson: Jazz Musician in New York

About Lou Donaldson

Lou Donaldson was an American jazz alto saxophonist whose early playing carried the imprint of bebop’s Charlie Parker lineage before settling into a more blues-forward, groove-minded language. Across hard bop and soul jazz settings, his sound favors direct melody and rhythmic ease over flash. In New York City, his work is frequently revisited on major stages, including Dizzy’s Club, where ensembles have marked his legacy through programs like the Lou Donaldson Centennial Celebration. The arc of his career traces a bridge between bebop complexity and danceable swing.
