Thao Nguyen, who records and performs as Thao, is an American singer-songwriter based in San Francisco, first widely known as the front person and primary writer for Thao & the Get Down Stay Down. Her songs pull from folk structures, country inflections, and hip-hop rhythm, and she has worked in collaborative settings with artists including Joanna Newsom, Andrew Bird, Merrill Garbus, Mirah, and the Portland Cello Project. In New York City she brings this solo work to the Mercury Lounge. Her performances tend to favor direct delivery and lyrical detail over spectacle.
