Peni Candra Rini’s Jiwa Kala is a performance project led by the Indonesian vocalist and composer, presented in New York City by World Music Institute at National Sawdust. For this appearance, she works in a trio with New York–based multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and percussionist Andy McGraw, drawing on rock and pop frameworks while opening them to spare, textural interplay. The set is built around voice as a compositional center, with instruments shifting function from rhythm to atmosphere. The approach favors structure and detail over spectacle.
