    About This Event

Peni Candra Rini's Jiwa Kala, presented by World Music Institute, comes to National Sawdust with a trio including Shahzad Ismaily and Andy McGraw. Ismaily, a New York–based multi‑instrumentalist who shifts roles within ensembles and blends rock/pop structures with indie and ambient‑jazz textures, will contribute bass, electronics and textural interplay that foregrounds feel and group interaction. Expect emphasis on arrangement and collective interplay rather than individual virtuosity.

    About Jiwa Kala

Peni Candra Rini brings her Jiwa Kala to National Sawdust in a trio with New York multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily and drummer Andy McGraw, presented by World Music Institute. The project moves between song form and open-ended structure, using rock and pop as a frame while letting indie and ambient-jazz instincts shape the space around the voice. In New York, the collaboration reads as a small-scale cultural exchange staged in real time, with Javanese-rooted sensibilities meeting downtown improvisation. One clear point emerges: the music treats genre less as identity than as method.
