Matana Roberts: Classical Musician in New York

About Matana Roberts

Matana Roberts is a New York City–based sound experimentalist, visual artist, and jazz saxophonist and clarinetist who works as both composer and improviser. Their background includes ties to the AACM and the B.R.C., contexts that inform a practice rooted in extended technique, structure, and open-ended ensemble exchange. At venues such as ISSUE Project Room, Roberts has appeared in collaborative settings, including performances with Ben Vida and Sara Magenheimer. The work tends to favor rigor and narrative shape over spectacle.
