Antônio Carlos Jobim: Jazz Musician in New York

About Antônio Carlos Jobim

Antônio Carlos Jobim, widely known as Tom Jobim, was a Brazilian composer, songwriter, and pianist-guitarist whose work helped define bossa nova by folding samba rhythm into the harmonic language of cool jazz. His songs entered the modern jazz repertory through collaborations and recordings with artists such as Stan Getz, and they continue to serve as durable vehicles for improvisers. In New York City, his music is regularly revisited at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Club in centennial programs and tribute sets. Jobim’s writing favors melodic economy and precise chord color over display.
