West Side Story

First staged on Broadway in 1957, *West Side Story* brought a contemporary New York story into the musical theater canon, recasting *Romeo and Juliet* amid rival youth gangs on the Upper West Side. The work was shaped by choreographer-director Jerome Robbins, composer Leonard Bernstein, lyricist Stephen Sondheim, and writer Arthur Laurents. Its score moves between symphonic writing and street-inflected rhythm, making it a natural fit for concert presentation in the city it depicts. One clear legacy is how it forced Broadway to treat urban conflict as subject, not backdrop.
