*On the Town* is a 1944 musical with music by Leonard Bernstein and a book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green, drawn from the earlier ballet *Fancy Free*. It follows three Navy sailors on 24-hour shore leave, moving through a fast, fragmentary New York of subway stops, dance halls, and chance encounters. The show premiered on Broadway at the Adelphi Theatre in December 1944, and its score brought a distinctly urban, jazz-inflected sound into the musical theater mainstream. Its New York feels less like a postcard than a city that keeps changing mid-step.
