*Swans Lake* is Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s 1870s ballet built around an enchanted swan-maiden and a prince caught between oath and deception. After a rocky early reception in Europe, the work became a repertory cornerstone, and New York audiences have known it through repeated stagings by major companies over the last century. At American Ballet Theatre, it sits alongside newer narrative ballets on the bill, a reminder of how 19th-century music continues to anchor NYC’s dance calendar. Its lasting force is structural: the score and the dance grammar still set the terms for classical storytelling.
