First issued in 2005, Kevin Devine’s *Split the Country…* marks a turn toward a fuller, band-forward sound, recorded after his break from Miracle of 86 and shaped with producers Chris Bracco, Mike Skinner, and Devine himself. The songs sit in a rock/pop framework, built on thicker arrangements and a more direct rhythmic drive than his earlier solo work. At The Bowery Ballroom, the material is revisited in a live New York context alongside Kevin Devine & the Goddamn Band and The High Chiefs. Its significance is less in novelty than in how it documents an artist retooling his voice for the stage.
