Opening at Broadway’s Imperial Theatre in 2025, *Smash* brings a once-televised backstage story into New York’s long tradition of musicals about making musicals. The plot tracks a creative team assembling a new show centered on Marilyn Monroe, with industry pressures shaping what reaches the stage. Music by Marc Shaiman with lyrics by Shaiman and Scott Wittman blends material known from the series with a new stage-written finale. Its sharpest point is observational: ambition, authorship, and image control become the real subject.
