Luigi Pirandello’s 1921 play *Six Characters in Search of an Author* stages a rehearsal interrupted by unfinished characters who insist their story be given form, forcing actors and director to argue over what is “real” onstage. The piece is a key early text of modernist theatre, later taken up in New York by groups drawn to its self-questioning structure and its influence on avant-garde performance. Now at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club, it reads less like a plot than a public investigation of authorship, identity, and theatrical labor.
