Released in 1995, *Set Your Goals* marked CIV’s first full-length statement, built in the fast, clean lines of punk rock with a pop-aware sense of chorus and structure. The record’s best-known track, “Can’t Wait One Minute More,” helped place the band in the mid-’90s New York conversation around post-hardcore and melodic punk. At Brooklyn Bowl, the album is heard in a live rock/pop setting alongside Into Another and Orange 9mm, tracing a local scene’s shared genealogy. One thing it shows, clearly, is how discipline and immediacy can coexist in loud music.
