SEI is a rock-pop stage work that borrows its name from Sei Shōnagon, the Heian-era court writer whose keen observations became *The Pillow Book*. In this version, presented by guitarists Kaki King and Tamar Eisenman at City Winery NYC, the subject is translated into sound: interlocking electric and lap-steel textures, blues-folk songwriting, and percussive, re-tuned guitar patterns. The show’s NYC context matters because it places a millennium-old literary voice inside a contemporary club setting.
