Roy Lichtenstein is presented at Whitney Exhibitions in New York as an exhibition tracing an artist who helped define Pop Art’s turn toward commercial print language. Working from comic strips, advertising, and other mass imagery, he translated disposable pictures into monumental paintings that made reproduction, authorship, and desire part of the subject. In a city that shaped postwar American art, the show reads as a local chapter in how museum culture absorbed the look of the street and the page. One clear takeaway is how his cool, mechanical surfaces sharpen the emotions he depicts rather than flatten them.
