Round Midnight

Thelonious Monk wrote “’Round Midnight” in the early 1940s, and its brooding melody helped define the modern-jazz ballad as it took hold in New York’s after-hours scene. The tune became a common language in the city’s clubs, built for late sets where players test time, harmony, and restraint. It remains one of the most frequently recorded pieces in the jazz repertoire, with Monk’s own small-group version later recognized by the Grammys. At Smalls Jazz Club and Dizzy’s Club, artists including Raphael D’Lugoff, Brilliant Corners, Helen Sung, DeWitt Fleming Jr., and Julius Rodriguez return to a standard that still rewards patience.
