*Raymonda* is a late-19th-century Russian grand ballet in three acts, set in a medieval world of courtly loyalty, temptation, and an arranged marriage tested by an outsider’s challenge. Created for prima ballerina Pierina Legnani, it pairs Marius Petipa’s formal classicism with Alexander Glazunov’s symphonic score. In New York City, it entered repertory mainly in excerpts, with the Hungarian-inspired divertissement from the final act becoming a frequent concert showpiece. Its full-length structure can feel episodic, but the dance architecture is exacting and historically revealing.
