*One Piece* is a Netflix live-action reworking of Eiichiro Oda’s long-running manga, guided by showrunners Matt Owens and Steven Maeda with Oda involved as a consultant. It follows the Straw Hat crew as they chase freedom and fortune across a seafaring fantasy world, translating anime-coded momentum into physical sets and bodies. In New York, its afterlife shows up less as a premiere event than as nightlife culture, here reframed at Seventh Heaven Bar & Karaoke through Anime Social Nexus and an electronic-leaning karaoke format. The critical question it raises is whether adaptation can keep a fan-made sense of community while changing the medium.
