At Dizzy’s Club in New York, the Gaia Wilmer Large Ensemble joins vocalist Mônica Salmaso to revisit the songbook of Gilberto Gil. Gil, a Brazilian singer-songwriter and former Minister of Culture, wrote across samba, rock, reggae, and African-derived traditions, mapping pop music onto civic life. This program places those melodies inside a large-ensemble jazz frame, testing how orchestration can shift a song’s center of gravity without flattening its roots. The result reads as cultural translation as much as tribute.
