Built around ABBA recordings, *Mamma Mia* is a jukebox musical by playwright Catherine Johnson, developed with Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, that uses pop songs to carry a family story forward. In New York, it became a durable part of the Broadway ecosystem at the Winter Garden Theatre, where it ran for years and helped normalize the songbook-musical model that many later shows followed. It now appears in different NYC contexts, from the Longacre Theatre to City Winery’s brunch-format concert led by The Neon Queen. Its durability is less about plot mechanics than about how familiar hooks can function as narrative infrastructure.
