La Traviata

0 upcoming performances in New York

Giuseppe Verdi’s *La Traviata* is a three-act opera with a libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, adapted from Alexandre Dumas fils’ *La Dame aux camélias*. It follows Violetta, a Paris courtesan whose attempt at ordinary love is undone by money, class, and public judgment. Premiered in Venice in 1853, the work quickly entered the repertory and became a cornerstone of opera life in New York, long associated with the Metropolitan Opera’s history and audience. Verdi’s blunt realism remains its quiet provocation.
