King Kong

Screening at MoMA, John Guillermin’s 1976 *King Kong* revisits the familiar fable of an expedition that brings a giant ape from a remote island into the machinery of modern spectacle, with a young woman caught at the center. The story’s pressure point remains the collision between wonder, exploitation, and the city’s appetite for display. In New York, Kong belongs to the skyline as much as to cinema history; the 1933 original became an early touchstone of the city on screen. Guillermin’s remake reads, in part, as a period document of how that myth gets rebuilt for a new era.
