Ikigai

“Ikigai” takes its title from a Japanese idea: a person’s felt reason for living. At the Uptown Rhythm Dance Festival, it is presented inside the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum’s spiral rotunda, where the architecture shapes how bodies move and how sound carries. Kukai Dantza performs alongside dancers Yarin and Naomi Funaki in a work that treats purpose as something assembled through motion rather than explained in words. In New York, that framing reads as cultural translation without simplification, and it benefits from restraint.
