Chloé Zhao brings *Hamnet* to MoMA as part of the museum’s ongoing film program, situating a recent British period drama inside New York’s archive-minded viewing culture. Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s novel and co-written by Zhao, the film follows William Shakespeare and Agnes Hathaway in the aftermath of their young son’s death, keeping the household—not the legend—at the center. Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal play the couple, with Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn in supporting roles. The restraint of the approach gives grief a social texture, rather than turning it into spectacle.
