Godspell

0 upcoming performances in New York

First staged in New York City in the early 1970s, *Godspell* helped mark a shift toward contemporary, ensemble-driven musical storytelling with explicitly spiritual material. Built as a sequence of parables drawn largely from the Gospel of Matthew, it moves through community games, teaching scenes, and hymn-rooted songs, with the Passion appearing near the end. The piece matters less for plot than for how it frames belief as a public, collective act. Now presented live at NJPAC, with Stephen Schwartz and guest vocalists.
