First staged in New York City in 1971, *Godspell* helped define a new kind of American musical theatre, using a loose, ensemble-driven structure rather than a conventional plot. Built from parables drawn largely from the Gospel of Matthew, it moves through comic sketches and hymn-based songs before a brief, sober turn toward the Passion. Now presented live at NJPAC with Stephen Schwartz and guest vocalists, it reads as a period document of post-’60s stage spirituality, though its communal form still holds.
