Etc, Etc, Etc US Tour arrives at Kupferberg Center for the Arts with Sexmob, a New York jazz group that first took shape in the Knitting Factory scene around Steven Bernstein’s slide trumpet. The ensemble works by taking well-known pop and rock material apart and rebuilding it into sharp, off-kilter arrangements that treat songs as structures to be tested. In a city where genre boundaries are routinely negotiated onstage, their method reads as a local tradition with a skeptical edge. One result is that familiarity becomes unstable, and listening turns active.
