Enigma Variations

Edward Elgar’s *Enigma Variations* is an orchestral set of fourteen character pieces spun from a single theme, written at the turn of the 20th century and quickly absorbed into concert life on both sides of the Atlantic. Each variation sketches a different person from the composer’s circle, turning private portraits into public music. At David Geffen Hall, the New York Philharmonic pairs it with Max Bruch’s Violin Concerto, with Nikolaj Szeps‑Znaider as soloist. Its enduring significance lies in how it makes friendship and memory audible without ever fully explaining itself.
