Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 film follows teenager Marty McFly as a malfunctioning DeLorean sends him from 1980s California to 1955, where a small mistake threatens his own existence. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd anchor a story that treats time travel like a chain of everyday consequences. The movie had a high-profile New York City premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre in Manhattan in 1985, part of its early national rollout. Its clean pacing makes a complicated premise feel almost ordinary.
