First staged in 1944 by choreographer Martha Graham with a score by Aaron Copland, *Appalachian Spring* is a portrait of American ritual: a young couple, a frontier community, and a preacher figure shaping a public life from private vows. Copland’s later suite helped fix the music in the U.S. concert repertory, while the original ballet remains central to Graham’s legacy, often seen in New York as part of the city’s modern dance lineage. At Groupmuse NYC, with featured performer Liana Pailodze Harron, it reads as a spare work where restraint does much of the storytelling.
