SUR New York Performances

At National Sawdust, *SUR* brings mezzo-soprano Daniela Mack together with Grammy-nominated bandoneonist JP Jofre and his quintet for a program centered on Astor Piazzolla’s songs. Piazzolla’s tango nuevo sits between concert music and street idioms, built on tight counterpoint and rhythmic pressure that draws from popular forms. In New York, where tango has long been a downtown import as much as a dance-hall tradition, the project reads as a local chapter in a wider South American modernism. The strongest moments treat the voice as another instrument in the ensemble rather than a soloist set apart.
