About this Work
Horst von Harbou
Fritz Lang’s 1927 silent epic *Metropolis* maps a future city split between industrial labor and elite control, using expressionist design to turn social conflict into architecture. It helped set the visual grammar of feature-length science fiction and remains a reference point for films that imagine technology as governance. New York encountered it early through late-1920s engagements at major Manhattan houses, and it has since cycled through the city’s repertory and music scenes as a living artifact. At Roulette, Jeff Mills presents a tightly synchronized live electronic score, treating the film like a contemporary composition.
