Swedish Cottage Marionette Theatre sits in Manhattan’s Central Park at West 79th Street and West Drive, near the Delacorte Theater. The small wooden building was brought from Sweden after the 1876 Centennial Exposition and installed in the park in 1877. Today it is operated by City Parks Foundation and presents marionette productions geared to family audiences, with daytime performances that follow the park’s seasonal rhythm. Its carved Scandinavian detailing reads less like a typical theater facade than a carefully transported piece of craft history.
