Imitation of Life at The Shed

At The Shed, *Imitation of Life* comes to the stage as a contemporary reexamination of a story that entered American culture through Fannie Hurst’s 1933 novel and the widely seen 1934 screen adaptation. It follows intertwined lives shaped by race, class, and the performance of identity, with motherhood and ambition carrying both refuge and cost. The material has long been a reference point in conversations about passing and domestic labor in the U.S., and its return in New York reads as a deliberate act of historical recall. Its melodramatic framework can feel blunt, yet it exposes social arrangements that still organize daily life.
