About This Event
At Kupferberg Center for the Arts the bill pairs Malian singer-songwriter Salif Keïta — a member of the Keita royal family frequently referred to as the "Golden Voice of Africa" — with Poppy, the genre-crossing artist whose work moves between rock and pop and is shaped by performance art and internet-era persona work. The evening presents Keïta’s "La Nuit" solo alongside Poppy’s "Nalim" album release, highlighting contrasting approaches to voice and staged persona.
About La Nuit
"La Nuit" is a 1964 song by Belgian singer and composer of Italian ancestry Salvatore Adamo and one of his definitive songs besides "Tombe la neige" and "Inch'Allah". He simultaneously released an Italian language version as well under the title "La notte" and a Spanish version as "La noche". The French language "La Nuit" reached number 3 on the Belgian singles chart in 1964. In Spain, the song was interpreted by Raphael.
About the Artists
Salif Keita
Salif Keita is a Malian singer-songwriter from the Keita royal lineage, long recognized for a voice that carries traditional West African phrasing into modern song forms. His recorded work moves through afropop and afro house, and his audience extends well beyond Mali.
Poppy
Poppy, the stage name of Moriah Rose Pereira, moves between rock and pop with an approach shaped by performance art and internet-era persona work. She first drew notice through tightly controlled online videos that played with artificial affect and media satire, then shifted focus toward genre-crossing songwriting and live production.
