At the Brooklyn Museum, *Hopi Kachina Dolls: Blessings for a Balanced World* considers carved figures as living cultural objects rather than decorative “folk art.” The exhibition traces how katsina imagery, ceremony, and community responsibilities are carried into wood, paint, and form, and how these dolls have circulated beyond Hopi communities over time. In New York, that context matters, given the city’s long history of collecting and displaying Indigenous material under shifting museum standards. One clear takeaway is how the show asks viewers to treat representation as accountability, not style.
