Malaya Sol Quintet 'Madura' Album Debut
About This Event
Brooklyn-based vocalist Malaya Sol, born in Zambales, Philippines, brings the Malaya Sol Quintet to The Django for the debut of the album Madura. Her decade of travel and work with diverse ensembles informs a program that draws on world music, jazz and soul, presented here in a quintet format.
About Madura
Sakurai Midori
Madura takes its name from the narrow channel of water that divides Java from the island of Madura in eastern Indonesia, a working passage marked by small outlying isles and a modern bridge that links Surabaya to Bangkalan. At The Django in New York, the project is framed as a live jazz set, with the Malaya Sol Quintet tracing that geography in sound rather than narration. There is no widely documented NYC premiere history attached to the title, but its reference point carries the weight of migration routes and coastal trade. One clear strength is its restraint: it lets place and distance register through ensemble texture.
