About The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans

At Whitney Exhibitions, *The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans* surveys the work of African-American artist Minnie Evans, whose images grew out of recurring dreams and private visions. Spanning the 1940s through the 1980s, the show tracks her shifting materials, from wax and crayon to graphite and oil, while keeping faith with an internal iconography of faces, plants, and invented cosmologies. For New York audiences, it reads as a corrective to the city’s canon, placing a self-taught Southern modernist in an institution that long centered different narratives. The work’s density can feel devotional, as if drawing were a daily practice of translation.

Minnie Evans was an African-American self-taught artist whose practice unfolded from the 1940s through the 1980s, rooted in recurring visions and dreams she recorded from childhood onward. Working across wax and crayon, graphite, and oil, she built dense, symbolic images often associated with Southern folk and outsider traditions as well as visionary surrealism.
