    Trumpeter Philip Harper, who began studying at ten and studied with Jackie McLean at the Hartt School before moving to New York at 18, has recorded and performed with artists including Betty Carter, Jimmy McGriff and Cedar Walton. At Smalls Jazz Club he leads the Philip Harper Quartet, a working band that emphasizes ensemble conversation, clean articulation and tempo while leaving space for the rhythm section to shape the narrative.
