Katsura Sunshine's Rakugo

Rakugo is Japanese comic storytelling performed by a single speaker seated on a small stage, using only a fan and a cloth to suggest place, action, and characters. At New World Stages, featured performer Katsura Sunshine works inside the form’s rules while translating its rhythms for an English-speaking New York audience. Rakugo has circulated in NYC through touring artists and festival programs, but remains a rare sight on local commercial stages. Its restraint is the point: a whole cast appears through voice, timing, and a slight turn of the head.
