Peggy Cooper Cafritz: Performing Artist in New York

About Peggy Cooper Cafritz

Peggy Cooper Cafritz is a Washington-based collector and arts patron whose holdings have shaped public conversations about modern and contemporary art, particularly work by Black artists. In New York City, her name is closely linked to presentations at The Studio Museum in Harlem, where her collection is examined in the exhibition “Dreams of This Future: The Collection of Peggy Cooper Cafritz.” The show treats collecting as a form of authorship, tracing how relationships, mentorship, and long-term commitment influence what enters the canon. Her approach favors sustained support and institutional access over spectacle.
