About Obasi Akoto Quartet
The Obasi Akoto Quartet is a New York City–based jazz group heard at Smalls Jazz Club, where the room’s close listening shapes the set. Led by Obasi Akoto, the band draws on a working network that includes drummer Steve Johns and collaborators such as The Mythology Band. Their repertoire leans on ensemble interplay and clear melodic statements, with solos that develop through conversation rather than display. The quartet’s approach favors structure and time feel over spectacle.
