About Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak was an American author and illustrator whose work reshaped the visual language of children’s literature, from *Where the Wild Things Are* to later, darker fables. Raised in a Polish-Jewish family marked by Holocaust loss, he carried that history into images where wonder sits close to danger. Sendak also brought his drawing practice into the theater, designing sets for opera, including Mozart’s *The Magic Flute*. In New York City, his work has been presented at venues such as The Morgan Library & Museum, where his line and storytelling can be read as stagecraft on the page.
