Ellis Marsalis: Jazz Musician in New York

About Ellis Marsalis

Ellis Marsalis was a jazz pianist and educator whose career began in the postwar era and later came into wider view as a central figure in the Marsalis musical family. Best known for his work at the keyboard and in the classroom, he developed a reputation for shaping musicians as carefully as he shaped repertoire. In New York City, his music is revisited at Dizzy’s Club through programs such as Jason Marsalis Presents the Rare Works of Ellis Marsalis, led by his youngest son. His writing and playing favor structure and swing over display.
