Chris Van Voorst van Beest is a New York City–based jazz musician working in the space between straight-ahead playing and freer improvisation. At Bar Bayeux, he appears in a small-room trio with Zach Lapidus and drummer Nathan Ellman-Bell, a regular on the city circuit who has also played and recorded with Kenny Warren’s Sweet World. Van Voorst van Beest’s sets tend to build from close listening and quick shifts in texture rather than fixed arrangements. The emphasis is on tempo as a shared responsibility, not a backdrop.
