About Chevalier de Saint-Georges
Chevalier de Saint-Georges, also known as Joseph Bologne, was a French violinist-composer and conductor who moved between the concert stage and military life, and was also known in his time as a fencer and dancer. A free man of color in 18th-century Europe, he wrote violin concertos, chamber music, symphonies, and opéra comique that placed him within the classical mainstream of his era. His work is heard in New York City programs at David Geffen Hall, including pairings with Mozart in events like “Courtesies and Comedy: Mozart and Bologne.” The writing favors clean lines and rhythmic drive over ornamental display.
