Steve Johns Sextet: Jazz Ensemble in New York

About Steve Johns Sextet

Steve Johns Sextet is a New York City–based jazz group led by drummer Steve Johns, heard in the close-room setting of Smalls Jazz Club. The band draws on Johns’s working circle, including collaborators such as Obasi Akoto, and approaches the music as a shared conversation rather than a showcase. Johns is known for steady time and quick, responsive listening, while the ensemble leans into tight rhythmic alignment and group interplay. Their performances favor clarity and collective balance over display.
